MEANS TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION

Desertification can be combated with several parameters, Reaforestation and Agroforestry, introducing modern agric techniques, sensitisation of the entire communities, prevention of the cultivation of certain crops, local legislation implemented, and local communities needs, need be provided.

Reaforestation and Agroforestry will go a long way to contribute to prevent the spread of desertification. This is because the damaged forest, the endangered species of plants and other useful economic trees will be available which could generate income from their annual harvest, contributing to combat poverty and bring about sustainable rural development. If economically rich trees like oranges, pears, grapes, plums, ebony, iroko, dossier, bush mango, kola, bitter kola and other endangered species of trees are planted, they will contribute to preventing the spread of desertification in the entire forest lone. The trees will have to play a very great role in conserving the topsoil against soil erosion and hence will improve soil for agricultural production.

Modern agricultural techniques be introduced to peasant agricultural development such as the sensitisation of the local population to apply chemical fertilizer to exhausted lands, the use of modern tools to farming methods, the application of pesticides for greater agricultural yields, and other experienced techniques.

Sensitisation of the entire community, school children and persons of other leaving institutions. Business partners on the need to combat desertification for their sustainability will go a long way to arrest the ills of the spread of desertification. Moreover, leaving centres where individuals and group of persons can discuss issues related to preventing the spread of desertification need by opened. This is especially in forums like conferences, information centres, internet centres and other media. Additionally, individuals and school children will explore other organisations combating desertification so that contacts on cooperation ties be established.

The local communities will be consulted especially the owners of the forest so that laws be passed in their local council will conform to the maintenance of the integral part of the forests resources. These laws will be between the local chiefs who have direct relationship with the forest to prevent forest users to cultivate certain kind of crops like cereals and certain farming methods like bush fires be completely avoided. These communities will need to be thought scientific names so that they can recognise common plants and names of plants of other communities.

On the whole, local communities need be provided structures and services to contribute to alleviating poverty. This is because poverty contributes immensely in destroying the forest, causing the spread of desertification. This structures will include, women and girls training centres where they can study a handwork to sustain their livelihood. This may include internet and computer centres, tailoring workshops, carpentry workshops, home economic centres, micro-financing centres and a host of others. In a nutshell, these activities will be gearing towards the policies put in place by government to conserve the environment and biodiversity.
